On Friday, the UEFA Champions League quarter-final draw was held at the UEFA headquarters at midday. Eight of this season’s best sides in Europe have qualified after an intense last round of 16 knockouts. With underdogs such as Ajax Amsterdam already picking up the sculp of holders Real Madrid, it proved that anything can happen. With all four teams from the English Premier League qualifying this season for the quarterfinals, the odds were high that there would be at least one all-English tie in the knockout.
EPL Teams Face Each Other in UEFA Quarter Final Draw
English teams haven’t performed this good in the Champions League in while, with the last time four EPL teams making it into the quarters coming over a decade ago. It is unfortunate that at least one team from England is guaranteed not to make it to the semi-finals. As things stand, high flying Barclays Premier League leaders Manchester City will face London-based Tottenham Hotspurs away in the first leg of the quarterfinals. Liverpool and Manchester United managed to avoid each other, drawing sides from Portugal and Spain respectively. Five times winners of the competition Liverpool will face an FC Porto while the Red Devils will host Lionel Messi and his Barcelona teammates at Old Trafford.
Favourites to Win the Champions League
While Ajax definitely staked their claim to be deserving of a quarter-final spot by eliminating the holder, they are up against another mammoth task in Ronaldo and Juventus. The Italian side came from behind to beat Atletico Madrid 3-0 to qualify 3-2 on aggregate. The striker looks to have found his scoring boots after having scored only one goal in the Champions League this season. In his previous five encounters with Ajax, Ronaldo has scored seven goals. The only remaining Spanish side is FC Barcelona and they will be keen to keep the trophy in Spain. In the last five seasons, the UEFA trophy has remained in Spain and if Messi has anything to do about it, it shall remain there for a while longer.
