Brief Pro14 Rugby History

The addition of two rugby teams from South Africa only took place in the 2017/18 season. All that time, the league featured teams from Europe. In its formative years, it was called the Celtic League in 1999. At the time, only Scotland, Ireland and Wales rugby teams participated. Fast-forward to the 2006/2007 season when the league received sponsorship from Irish cider makers Magners, the league had 10 teams at the time. The sponsorship lasted until the 2010/11 season, and there was an expansion from 10 to 12 teams. The new sponsor of the then dubbed Pro12 league was RaboDirect. Following the addition of teams outside of the Celtics nations, the league would experience a rebrand and further expansion. The last time additions were made into the league was the 2017/18 season, when the Southern Kings and the Cheetahs joined the rugby competition.

Pro14 Betting Tips for South Africans

Gamblers need to note that the South African rugby teams are not eligible to qualify for the European Competition. However, seven places remain for teams contending in the Pro14 competition. The top three sides in each conference, excluding the SA rugby teams, will gain qualification into the Champions Cup. The 4th placed side in both conferences will a play for the seventh place in the Cup.

The distance of travelling between South Africa and Europe is one of the reasons for the exclusion of SA teams. However, during the league season, home games are played on Saturdays to allowing away teams enough time to recuperate. Jet lag is always something to consider when betting, which has always affected visiting teams adversely despite the seven-day rest.
