The 2019 Rugby World Cup quarter-finals are upon us after the recent weather scare put doubt on the competition. During the weekend, Saturday’s games were called off while Sunday’s clash between hosts Japan vs Scotland was put in doubt pending a review. The two rugby teams squared off and Japan created history to become the first Asian rugby team to make it past the group stages and into the knockout rounds.
Here’s a list of teams that made out of the group stages in their individual rugby world cup pools:
1. New Zealand
2. South Africa
Rugby World Cup Dates
The Japan Rugby World Cup group stages were not without their surprises. The host nation pulled off a wonderfully executed game plan against Scotland to feature in the last eight of the competition and finish top of the group. They were always destined to have a difficult tie in the knockout round, with either South Africa or New Zealand as their opponent. The All Blacks are the oddsmaker’s favourite to win the rugby world cup, winning all of their group games to claim the top spot.
The Springboks are also vying to win their third crown and played the hosts in a warm-up match before the world cup. Japan lost to South Africa 41-7 in the World Cup warm-up match in Kumagaya. Japan will be buoyed by the fact that they were able to defeat the Boks 34-32 in the 2015 Rugby World Cup and will look to do the same in front of their home crowd.
