Behind a scenic backdrop of the Egyptian pyramids, the African Cup of Nation 2019 draw was held last Friday. Representatives from the 24 teams that made it out the AFCON 2019 qualifiers were gathered in a glitzy ceremony in Egypt to find out which teams they would play. There are none of the so-called ‘small teams’ left and the draw would pit teams with the best players in the continent that ply their trade in Europe’s biggest leagues. AFCON 2019 Fixtures
The 32nd edition of the competition will kick off on June 21st after all the domestic competitions have been closed. The Egyptian national soccer team will kick things off against Zimbabwe at the Cairo International Stadium. They will be hoping to go a step further than the last time the tournament was held in Gabon. The Egyptians were runners-up to eventual champions Cameroon. They will be buoyed by the fact that they have the current best player in Africa on their side. The last time they hosted the AFCON competition in 2006, they won it.
Predictions for the AFCON 2019 Winner
The Pharaohs won’t have it their way this time around, with all the teams bringing their strongest line-ups to this year’s competition. Previously, the soccer tournament was staged during the month of January till February and consisted only of 16 teams. The climate in Africa had prevented the tournament from being hosted in the summer. June to December is the season with the most rain. The decision to switch was greeted with much enthusiasm by European clubs that lost their players to the tournament.
